December 2 marks the UAE National Day — the anniversary of the country’s formation and its remarkable leap in development. In just over half a century, the Emirates have achieved what many countries take centuries to accomplish.
Today we’re used to comfort, skyscrapers, fast highways, and advanced technology. But in the 1970s, life here looked completely different — and the contrast is truly striking.
What the Emirates Looked Like in the 1970s
1. Roads That Barely Existed: Travel between cities and villages happened on sand tracks. Cars often got stuck simply because there was no proper road network. In 1966, Abu Dhabi had only one paved road — leading to the British embassy. The drive from Abu Dhabi to Dubai took about 4 hours (instead of 1 hour today).
2. Night Travel Meant Risking a Camel Encounter: There was almost no street lighting. Traffic lights were extremely rare. At night, camels freely wandered across the roads, making travel dangerous.
3. How People Dealt With the Heat: Air conditioning didn’t exist yet. In cars, people used wet cloths on the vent grille to cool down. At home, simple fans were considered a luxury.
4. Food and Restaurants: Daily meals were simple: dates, rice, fish, camel milk. Restaurants were almost nonexistent. Only by the mid-1970s did Indian, Chinese, and other international eateries begin to appear.
5. Air Quality — A Longstanding Challenge: In the 70s, air monitoring was almost nonexistent. But since the early 1980s, PM2.5 levels have consistently exceeded WHO guidelines — a challenge the region continues to address today.
What Does This Say About the UAE Today?
The UAE is a powerful example of how fast a nation can transform when there is a clear goal, strategy, and long-term vision. In just 54 years, world-class cities have risen from the desert — with the region’s best infrastructure, safety, education, economy, and investment environment.
This is why the UAE real estate market continues to grow steadily: a country developing this consistently remains one of the safest and most reliable places for living and investing.
